The Difference Between a UPS Authorized Shipping Outlet (ASO) and The UPS Store: What You Need to Know

Posted by Brandon Germann on Sep 19th 2024

As a small, family-owned Pack and Ship business, we’re dedicated to helping our customers with their shipping needs. But one question we get a lot is: "Are you the same as The UPS Store?" The short answer is no, and understanding the difference can help avoid confusion and frustration—especially when it comes to services like Amazon QR code returns.

What is a UPS Authorized Shipping Outlet (ASO)?

A UPS Authorized Shipping Outlet (ASO), like us at Signs and Novelties Pack-N-Ship, is an independently owned business that partners with UPS to offer shipping services. We can provide UPS drop-off services, pack your shipments, and sell UPS-approved packaging and shipping labels. But as an ASO, there are limitations to the services we can offer compared to The UPS Store.

What is The UPS Store?

The UPS Store locations are part of a franchise network directly affiliated with UPS. As franchised locations, they offer a wider range of services that go beyond shipping, including printing, copying, mailbox rentals, and exclusive UPS programs. One major difference is that The UPS Store has access to the proprietary UPS systems that allow them to handle Amazon QR code returns, among other specific services.

Why We Can’t Process Amazon QR Code Returns

One of the most common issues we run into is customers trying to return their Amazon packages using a QR code. Unfortunately, as a UPS Authorized Shipping Outlet, we don't have access to the special software that allows us to scan and process those QR codes. Only The UPS Store, along with certain other designated locations, has the ability to accept Amazon returns through this method.

We understand how frustrating it can be to arrive at our store expecting to return an item only to find out we can’t process the return. Trust us—we don’t want to turn you away! But without the proper systems in place, we physically can't accept Amazon QR code returns.

Here’s why:

  • The QR Code Process: When you choose to return an item to Amazon using a QR code, Amazon partners directly with UPS (through specific locations like The UPS Store) to scan and process the return without requiring you to print a label or box the item. The QR code is a part of a digital return system that we simply don’t have access to as an ASO.
  • Our Limitations: While we can process UPS returns that come with a pre-printed label, we cannot scan QR codes. Amazon QR codes require the unique system and contract services that only The UPS Store and specific Amazon-approved partners can offer.

How We Can Still Help You

Although we can't process Amazon QR code returns, we’re happy to help with many other shipping services! Here's what we can do for you:

  • UPS Shipping and Drop-Offs: If you have a package with a UPS label, we can accept it and get it on its way. We also offer packing services if you need help preparing your shipment.
  • Pre-Labeled Returns: If your Amazon return includes a pre-printed label (instead of a QR code), we can accept and process it with no problem.
  • Additional Shipping Services: We offer USPS, FedEx, and DHL shipping options, so no matter how you need to send something, we’ve got you covered.

Why This Difference Matters

We know it can be confusing, especially since both The UPS Store and UPS Authorized Shipping Outlets have "UPS" in their name. But understanding this distinction can help you save time and avoid frustration. If you need to return something to Amazon using a QR code, The UPS Store is your best option. However, for most other shipping and packing services, we’re more than happy to assist you.

The Bottom Line

At Signs and Novelties Pack-N-Ship, we take pride in being part of our local community and helping our customers with their shipping needs. We don’t like turning people away, especially when it comes to something as simple as a return. Unfortunately, there are some services—like Amazon QR code returns—that we simply aren’t equipped to handle. We encourage you to check your return method before stopping by to ensure you can get your package shipped out smoothly.

We value your understanding and support of our family business. And remember, for any shipping services (other than QR code returns!), we’re always here to help.

Thank you for trusting us with your shipping needs!
